The Aurajoentie Tourist Road

A new tourist road was established in Finland for the first time in a decade, and it is not just any road. The Aurajoentie road travels the entire 70 kilometres from Turku to Oripää in our national landscape in the Aurajokilaakso. The Aurajoentie Tourist Road has its own logo.

Aurajoentie is a historic Varkaantie that runs along the west side of the Aurajoki. Aurajoentie is a national landscape and a nationally valuable built cultural environment (RKY) with dozens of interesting landscape and cultural sites and service companies. Few Helsinki residents know where Lieto, Aura, Pöytyä or Oripää are located – but everyone knows where the Aurajoki is. The tourist road is likely to raise awareness of the sub-region, crystallise its appeal and create a nationally renowned brand for both tourists and residents and entrepreneurs. The tourist road is primarily a tourist product.

HISTORICAL AURAJOENTIE

Aurajoentie is the historical road from Turku and Southwest Finland to Satakunta in the region of Southwest Finland in Finland. It is one of the nationally significant built cultural environments in Finland as defined by the National Board of Antiqu immigration in 2009. In 2021, the road was approved as the Aurajoentie Tourist Road (Aurajoentien Matkailutie).

ROAD`S CHARM

“The Aura River Landscape Road – The Aurajoki has many faces: the landscapes of the river valley have taken shape over centuries, even millennia, and built a whole with alternating prehistory, diverse nature and a ribbon of the country’s oldest settlement and work. No wonder the Aurajokilaakso has been designated as one of Finland’s national landscapes.” Viri Teppo-Pärnä, TIEN LUMO – Aurajoen maisematie 2009.

UNIQUE RIVERSIDE

The Aurajokilaakso is a national landscape and one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Finland. Aurajoki originates from the gravel ridge of Oripäänkangas and travels to Oripää, Pöytyä, Aura, Lieto and Kaarina for a distance of 70 kilometres to Turku and the Archipelago Sea. The river begins as a narrow stream and winds deep into field openings and villages. The oldest fields have been cultivated since the Iron Age, when some villages have also been inhabited.
